Whether you are an elite athlete, high performer or hard worker no one wants to be sick. Good health is an essential key to good confidence and  performance in all aspects of life. Think about your relationships, your attitude and your finances. Good health makes a great impact on those aspects of your life. It is far better to be healthy than to have to be healed don’t you agree? Don’t you want to know how you can be pro active about your health and stay healthy, energetic and confident?

When I was studying sports nutrition while in grad school finishing up my Master Degree in Sport Management I was also finishing up my college football career. Now that I was gaining  knowledge  about nutrition and how it applied directly to my physical health and performance I grew a stronger desire to pay close attention to the information. There’s a lot I could share about nutrition and staying healthy but let’s focus on what many researchers believe to be the #1 component to good health.

What is the immune system?

Wikipedia defines the immune system as : “A system of biological structures and processes within an organism that protects against disease. To function properly, an immune system must detect a wide variety of agents, from viruses to parasitic worms, and distinguish them from the organism’s own healthy tissue. In short your IMMUNE SYSTEM protects you against billions of bacteria, viruses, and other parasites.

Imagine you have your own personal
army. That army protects you against any outsiders who want to do you harm. The Stronger your army the greater it can defend you. The weaker your own…well you get the point!  Our immune system is constantly on the alert and attention, attacking at the first sign of an invasion by harmful organisms.

What Nutrients from food provide immune strength?

Many fruits, vegetables, and unprocessed whole foods have properties that can benefit our health. Studies in the past 10 years have taken nutritional research beyond MACRONUTRIENTS like protein, carbohydrates, fats and MICRONUTRIENTS like vitamins and minerals. NUTRIENTS or chemicals in the plants called PHYTONUTRIENTS have been a specific focus in the past decade. It’s recommended that adults eat a minimum of 5-9 servings of fruits and vegetables a day to get the benefits of the nutrients that promote good health. Because most Americans live so busy lives its very difficult to get all of those servings through eating food. That’s why The American Medical Association recommends that all adults take one multivitamin daily. This is true even if you already eat a diet rich in fresh, whole, natural foods, because the foods you consume often don’t supply all the vitamins and minerals you need, at the recommended levels.
