NFL Cornerback Tips:  How do I make the football team this year?

I just received an email from a college kid who attends the University of Alabama.  He would like to play on the Alabama football team and this will be done by walking on the team which is a process.  He asked me what does he need to do to be able to accomplish this goal.  I told him that this will be a process, and that he will have to do a few things before he will even have the chance to get into camp to prove his skills as a football player.

The first thing he must find out is his strengths and weaknesses.  This will be important because he needs to know what position he will tell the coach that he plays.  For example, if you are 5’8 170 pounds, do you think it would be smart to try out at defensive end?  You must know what you are good at to begin with to give yourself the best chance of getting noticed by the coaches.

The next thing would be passing the look test.  All this means is that you must put in a minimum of 3 months of hard core strength and conditioning in to transform your body to look like a professional athlete.  That means also to lower your body fat percentage by eating healthy and nutrition.  You will be surprised at how first impressions can make or break your chances.  It is just something that cannot be avoided by human beings and you must use it to your advantage.

The third thing that you should understand is that you will have to probably be tested in combine like testing.  This is something that is just like the NFL, which means if you can bench press 225 a certain amount of times, jump a high vertical and most importantly run a fast 40 yard dash you will make the team no problem!  Now once you are in training camp with the rest of College scholarship players it is up to you to show your technique and skill to earn a position but it takes that process above to even get your foot in the door.

To summarize what you need to do to give yourself the best chance to make it into training camp at a top college, is to know what you are good at, in order to know what you are trying out for.  Pass the look test when you first meet the coaches and to do well when they test your skills at their team combine.   Which basically means run a very fast 40 yard dash!!!  The faster you run, the more opportunities you will have even in the NFL.  That is just the way it goes so make sure you do what it takes to run a fast 40 yard dash.
